False Cognates (False Friends)
Cognates are considered "our friends" because they can help us out immensely when learning a new language. Cognates are words that sound and look similar in two different languages and have a similar meaning. For example: class and clase or café and cafe. But we need to be very careful of false cognates (our false friends). For example:
  • embarazar means to get preganant-not get embarrassed
  • asistir means to attend or be present-not to assist
  • excitado means aroused-not excited
  • bizarro means to be brave-not bizzarre
  • carpeta is a file folder or table cover-not carpet
  • exito means success-not exit

When you can speak a few words to someone in their language, you are saying so much more than mere utterances. You are saying that you value their language, their culture and their existence. Our language, our culture and our perception of ourselves and others are intertwined. Each of them influences the other.
Language is much more than utterances of words, it is the expression of a culture, a history and an identity.

La Cultura
The Absolute "Perfect" World
The billboard and press campaign for Absolute Vodka now running in Mexico is a map representing what the Americas might look like in an "Absolut" -- i.e., perfect -- world. In this map the U.S.-Mexico border lies where it was before the Mexican-American war (1846-1848) when California, Texas and other Southwestern states were considered Mexican territory and known as Alta California and Nueva Mexico. The advertisement was intended to be viewed in Mexico and not the U.S. While it has enraged many Americans, it's interesting to note that the advertisement is based on fact. The vodka company has released a statement of apology.

"No matter what other nations may say about the United States, immigration is still the sincerest form of flattery."
Clayton Cramer

My daughter is traveling to Spain next summer to attend classes and has signed a contract to speak only Spanish for two months. I'd like to visit her while she's there, so I need to learn Spanish.
I listen to the KAMMS Spanish for Conversation in my car everyday and I am learning quickly. The voices are so pleasant to listen to and the method has me "thinking" in Spanish instead of trying to figure out the grammar. I've already started using my new language skills with family and friends!

Each month we highlight a question or comment from our friends & customers. Please contact us if you would like to ask or respond to a question or would like to make your "voice" heard.

We look forward to hearing from you!
